Why make your own speakers?

Most speakers you buy don't give you the value you'd expect for the price. Marketing, shipping, and retail margin all take a share before the sound even reaches you, and what's left often goes into components that are cheaper than the price tag suggests. Building your own puts that budget back where it matters (the drivers, the crossover, the cabinet) and gives you control over exactly what you're paying for.

Built for how you'll actually use it

Plenty of build plans exist online, but most chase a perfectly flat frequency response: great for a reference monitor, less so for a living room. A speaker with more character is usually more satisfying in a space built for enjoying music and TV, not analyzing it. Every plan here is voiced for its intended use, not just for a flat measurement.

Region-aware, so sourcing is simple

Not every driver or component is sold worldwide, so plans are grouped by region on the Build Plans page. Pick yours there and sourcing stays simple. If you don't mind importing for a specific look or a specific bit of performance, nothing stops you from choosing a plan outside your region either.

Difficulty, in real terms

Every plan is rated simple, moderate, or complex, based on what the build actually asks of you.

  • Simple: a day to a weekend. Minimal components, low cost, quick to finish.
  • Moderate: up to a week of evenings. More soldering, more circuit work to follow.
  • Complex: the longest builds. More intricate internals, more involved crossovers, higher component count.

None of it is out of reach: it's a question of convenience, and which kind of build you'd rather spend your time on.

Before you start

What you'll need to build one

A saw

Circular saw, jigsaw, or table saw all work. A jigsaw is the most versatile single choice: it handles circular cutouts, straight edges, and rectangular cuts all with one tool.

A drill

Any drill or impact driver is fine here, nothing specialized needed.

A handheld chamfer mill

Not essential, but highly recommended. It lets you flush-mount drivers into the baffle, which noticeably improves how the finished speaker looks.

Wood glue and clamps

For joining and holding cabinet panels while the glue sets, standard for any cabinet build.

A soldering iron

Needed for moderate and complex builds, where the crossover components are soldered together.

Basic safety gear is worth having on hand too: eye protection and hearing protection at minimum whenever power tools are in use.
